Every kilometre of national highway built, every megawatt of electricity added to the grid, and every new mobile tower erected leaves behind a trail of numbers. These numbers, when systematically collected and analysed, become the foundation upon which a nation plans its growth. Infrastructure data tells us where development is happening, where it is lagging, and where the next rupee of investment should go. For researchers in population and family health, understanding these data sources is critical because infrastructure availability directly shapes access to healthcare, education, mobility, and economic opportunity.

What counts as infrastructure data

Infrastructure data refers to systematically collected information about the physical and digital systems that support economic activity and daily life. This includes networks like railways and roads, utilities like electricity and water, communication systems, and urban amenities. Such data typically covers parameters like length, capacity, coverage, usage, condition, and ownership. Governments, statutory bodies, and international agencies maintain extensive datasets that researchers, policymakers, and private investors rely on to make informed decisions.

In a developing economy, infrastructure data carries additional weight. It reveals not just what exists but also the gaps that need urgent attention, helping target resources where they will have the greatest impact on human well-being.

Major categories of infrastructure data

Infrastructure data spans several interconnected sectors. Each category has dedicated agencies that produce regular reports, dashboards, and downloadable datasets.

Railways

The Indian Railways network is one of the largest in the world and generates massive amounts of operational and infrastructural data. Information on route length, electrification, gauge composition, passenger traffic, freight movement, locomotive stock, and station-level statistics is compiled by the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The Statistical Year Book India contains historical railway tables that researchers commonly use for trend analysis.

Roads and highways

Road infrastructure forms the backbone of passenger and goods movement. Roads carry over 60 percent of the country’s total goods and around 85 percent of its passenger traffic, which makes road statistics central to logistics and economic planning. The Basic Road Statistics of India publication by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways provides state-wise length of national highways, state highways, district roads, and rural roads. According to data reported by the Ministry, national highway length stood at 146,145 km in 2024, up from just 22,200 km in 1951.

Airways

Civil aviation has been one of the fastest-growing sectors. The Airports Authority of India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation publish data on airport infrastructure, aircraft movements, passenger traffic, cargo handled, and fleet size. The Ministry of Civil Aviation also tracks regional connectivity under schemes like UDAN. These datasets feed into broader connectivity planning and are used to evaluate public-private partnership models for new airports.

Waterways and ports

Coastal shipping, inland waterways, and major and non-major ports come under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Data includes cargo throughput, vessel traffic, port capacity, and navigability of inland river routes. The Inland Waterways Authority of India publishes information on declared national waterways, while major port statistics are released monthly and annually.

Electricity and power

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is the apex body for power sector data. It publishes monthly installed capacity reports, generation statistics, transmission line additions, and the broader National Electricity Plan. As of September 2025, the total installed generation capacity in the country stood at 5,00,889 MW, with renewable energy sources including hydro contributing nearly 49.4 percent. The National Power Portal functions as a unified system that captures daily and monthly data from generation and transmission utilities and disseminates analysed reports through GIS-enabled dashboards.

Telecommunications

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India releases monthly and quarterly performance indicator reports covering subscriber growth, teledensity, internet penetration, and broadband adoption. India’s internet subscriber base rose to 969.10 million by March 2025, with broadband subscribers reaching 944.12 million. These figures are essential for understanding the digital divide, designing rural connectivity programmes, and assessing the reach of digital health and education initiatives.

Urban and rural infrastructure

Urban infrastructure data covers housing, water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and municipal services. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs publishes data through dashboards linked to programmes like the Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, and the Swachh Bharat Mission. For rural infrastructure, the Ministry of Rural Development tracks rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, while the Mission Antyodaya survey provides village-level data on infrastructure availability. The decadal Census also offers detailed information on household amenities, drinking water sources, and electrification status.

For anyone undertaking research or policy analysis, knowing where to find authoritative infrastructure data is half the work done. Here are the most important repositories.

Open Government Data Platform

The Open Government Data (OGD) Platform, hosted at data.gov.in, is the single-point access to datasets published by ministries and departments. Launched in 2012 under the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy, it allows free downloads in machine-readable formats like CSV, XLS, JSON, and XML. The platform has a dedicated infrastructure sector page aggregating catalogues, datasets, and APIs from across departments.

National Data and Analytics Platform

The NDAP, developed by NITI Aayog, takes the OGD vision a step further by making government datasets searchable, mergeable, and visualisable in one interface. Researchers can pull data across sectors and time periods without juggling multiple downloads.

Sector-specific official sources

Some of the most reliable sector-specific sources include the Ministry of Railways portal, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways publications, the Central Electricity Authority dashboard, the TRAI publications page, the Airports Authority of India, the Indian Ports Association, and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Each agency maintains historical archives going back several decades, which is particularly useful for longitudinal studies.

Statistical compendiums

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation publishes the Statistical Year Book India and the annual Energy Statistics, both of which consolidate infrastructure indicators from multiple agencies. The Reserve Bank of India’s Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy also includes infrastructure-related macro indicators.

Infrastructure data is far more than a record-keeping exercise. It directly drives the choices governments make about where to spend, what to prioritise, and how to measure progress.

Guiding policy decisions

Policymakers use infrastructure data to identify regional disparities and design targeted interventions. For instance, low rural teledensity in certain states justifies expanded BharatNet rollouts. Similarly, gaps in installed generation capacity in a region inform decisions about new power plants or grid extensions. The National Electricity Plan prepared by the Central Electricity Authority projects installed capacity for 2026-27 at 609,591 MW, and these projections shape investment decisions across the sector.

Investment planning and prioritisation

Large infrastructure investments require evidence-based prioritisation. The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan integrates geospatial data from multiple ministries to identify the most impactful projects. The plan covers critical sectors including highways, railways, airports, ports, waterways, oil and gas pipelines, telecommunications, urban infrastructure, and energy transmission. Data-driven prioritisation helps avoid duplication, reduce delays, and ensure that complementary infrastructure is developed in sync.

Resource management and monitoring

Infrastructure data supports condition assessment and maintenance scheduling. Sensor data from railway tracks can predict failures, traffic density statistics inform road expansion needs, and load data on transformers helps schedule grid upgrades. This shifts the operational model from reactive maintenance to predictive management, extending asset life and saving public funds.

Measuring social and health outcomes

For population and family health researchers, infrastructure data has a particular significance. Road connectivity influences access to hospitals, electrification affects vaccine cold-chain reliability, telecom penetration shapes the reach of telemedicine, and water and sanitation infrastructure has direct bearing on disease burden. By linking infrastructure datasets with health surveys, researchers can quantify how physical development translates into improvements in maternal health, child mortality, and disease prevention.

Enabling private participation

Transparent infrastructure data is a precondition for attracting private investment through public-private partnership (PPP) models. The institutional framework in the transport sector operates through a multi-tiered, multi-agency structure with central ministries and the NITI Aayog playing central roles in formulating transport policies. Reliable, publicly accessible data lowers transaction costs and helps private players assess risks before committing capital.

Challenges in infrastructure data

Despite remarkable progress, several challenges remain. Data is often scattered across multiple portals, with inconsistent formats and varying update frequencies. Definitions sometimes differ between agencies, which complicates cross-sectoral analysis. Granular sub-district level data is still limited in several sectors, and the time lag between collection and publication can affect real-time decision-making. Initiatives like NDAP and PM Gati Shakti are addressing these issues by promoting interoperability and integration.

How students and researchers can use these sources

For a research project, the recommended approach is to start with the broad OGD Platform or NDAP to scope what is available, then move to sector-specific official sources for granular data. Always cross-check definitions and reporting periods, and look for metadata files that describe each dataset. Combining multiple sources, such as overlaying electricity access data with health facility distribution, often produces the most policy-relevant insights. Documentation of the data source, version, and date is essential for reproducibility.
