Population growth is one of the most powerful forces shaping the way nations develop. It influences everything from job markets and housing demand to school enrolment, healthcare planning, and even climate policy. For a country like India, which recently surpassed China in 2023 to become the most populous nation in the world, understanding how population changes over time is essential to making sense of the social and economic challenges ahead.

What is population growth?

Population growth refers to the change in the number of people living in a defined area over a specific period of time. It is usually expressed as a percentage and measured year-on-year. Demographers often use the annual population growth rate, which is the exponential rate of growth of the midyear population from year t-1 to year t, expressed as a percentage. A simple way to picture this: if a town has 1,000 people on 1 January and 1,020 on 31 December, the growth rate for that year is roughly 2%.

This measurement matters because it gives planners a snapshot of demographic momentum. A nation growing at 2% a year doubles its population in about 35 years, while a growth rate of 0.5% takes nearly 140 years to double. The pace of growth directly shapes how much food, water, infrastructure, healthcare, and employment a country must provide.

The three drivers: Births, deaths, and migration

Population change is governed by what demographers call the “demographic equation”. Population growth is the result of the birth rate, the mortality rate and the migration rate. In other words:

Natural increase is the difference between the number of births and deaths in a year. When births outnumber deaths, the population grows naturally. When deaths exceed births, it shrinks.

Net migration is the difference between people moving into an area (immigrants) and those moving out (emigrants). For countries like the United Arab Emirates or Canada, migration is the dominant driver of growth. For India, however, the levels of international migration are too small in relative terms to affect India’s population currently, so birth and death rates remain the main forces at play.

Positive and negative growth

Population growth can move in two directions, and both have very different consequences for a society.

Positive growth

Positive growth occurs when births plus immigration exceed deaths plus emigration. It is usually driven by higher fertility, falling mortality, or a combination of the two. India experienced this phase most dramatically after independence. A population explosion in India commenced following the great influenza epidemic of 1918-19, with a steadily accelerating rate of growth up to the census of 1961. Between 1947 and 1981, the population doubled, and by 2001 it had crossed the one billion mark.

This kind of rapid growth produces a young population, which can be an economic advantage if there are enough jobs, schools, and healthcare services. This is what economists call the “demographic dividend”. But the same growth, if unsupported by adequate resources, can strain housing, push up unemployment, and damage the environment.

Negative growth

Negative growth happens when deaths and emigration exceed births and immigration over a sustained period. The clearest signal of impending negative growth is a fertility rate that falls below the “replacement level” of 2.1 children per woman. When a country’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) drops to 2.1, demographers say that the country has reached ‘replacement fertility. Below this threshold, a population eventually starts to shrink.

This is no longer just a Japanese or European story. India’s TFR is now below replacement nationally, and the United Nations now projects that India’s population will start to decline in absolute terms from around 2060 onwards. Negative growth brings its own set of problems: an ageing workforce, rising pension and healthcare costs, and in some cases, shrinking towns and villages.

How population growth is measured

While the basic annual growth rate is useful, demographers often dig deeper using several specific indicators:

Crude Birth Rate (CBR): The number of live births per 1,000 people in a year.

Crude Death Rate (CDR): The number of deaths per 1,000 people in a year.

Total Fertility Rate (TFR): The average number of children a woman is expected to have over her lifetime.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): Deaths of infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births.

These metrics work together to give a layered picture of what is happening. For instance, a falling CDR combined with a high CBR (as India saw between 1950 and 1980) almost always produces rapid growth. A falling TFR combined with rising life expectancy (India today) signals a slowing growth trajectory that will eventually flatten.

Factors influencing population growth

Population growth never has a single cause. It emerges from the interaction of biological, socio-economic, and political forces that vary across regions, communities, and decades.

Biological factors

At the most basic level, population growth depends on human biology, the capacity to reproduce and to survive. Three biological factors stand out:

Fertility: Healthier women in their reproductive years tend to have more successful pregnancies. Nutrition, access to maternal care, and the age at which women start having children all influence how many children they ultimately bear.

Mortality: Improvements in nutrition, sanitation, and vaccination dramatically reduce death rates, especially among infants. In 1961, the Infant Mortality Rate in India was 115; the current all-India average is much lower at 57, though it still varies widely between states.

Life expectancy: As people live longer, even a stable birth rate can produce population growth for a generation or two, simply because fewer people are dying each year.

Socio-economic factors

Beyond biology, the social and economic context shapes how many children families choose to have and how long people live.

Education, especially of women: This is perhaps the single most powerful predictor of fertility decline. Educated women tend to marry later, have fewer children, and invest more in each child’s wellbeing. The contrast within India is striking: Uttar Pradesh has a literacy rate of 56% and records an average of four children per couple, while in Kerala, almost every person is literate and records an average of two children per couple.

Income and urbanisation: As families move from agrarian to urban settings, children become economically costly rather than economically useful. Smaller family norms quickly follow.

Healthcare access: Better antenatal and postnatal services reduce both maternal and infant mortality, which paradoxically also reduces the perceived need for “extra” children as insurance.

Cultural norms: Age at marriage, son preference, and family structures all matter. Population growth rates depend on factors such as work opportunities for women, access to contraception, age at marriage, and decision-making power within the household. Researchers also find that religion itself has little statistically significant effect on fertility once these socio-economic factors are accounted for.

Political and policy factors

Governments shape population dynamics through laws, programmes, and public investment. India’s policy journey is a useful example.

Family planning programmes: India launched the world’s first national family planning programme in 1952. Decades of investment in contraceptive access, awareness drives, and reproductive health services have helped bring the TFR down from over six in the 1950s to around two today.

National Population Policy, 2000: This policy laid out long-term goals for stabilising population, improving maternal and child health, and expanding reproductive choices.

Health and education missions: Programmes like the National Health Mission and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao have improved both child survival and the social status of girls, indirectly influencing family-size decisions.

Targeted district interventions: Mission Parivar Vikas focuses specifically on high-fertility districts in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, where the demographic transition has been slower.

Conflict, displacement, and immigration policy also fall into this category. Wars, refugee crises, and visa rules can reshape populations in a matter of years.

Why understanding population growth matters

Population growth is not just an abstract number on a census report. It tells us how many children will need schools, how many young adults will look for jobs, how many elderly will need pensions, and how much pressure cities will face. Regions experiencing rapid positive growth and regions sliding into negative growth need very different policies, sometimes within the same country.

India is now living through both stories at once. Southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu have either stabilised or are approaching stabilisation, while the northern Hindi belt continues to exhibit relatively high growth rates. Understanding the concept of population growth, what it means, how it is measured, and what drives it, is the first step toward making sense of these overlapping demographic realities.
