Every population is a moving target. Births, deaths, migrations, marriages, school admissions, hospital visits – millions of these small events stack up each year and reshape the size, structure, and character of a country’s people. Population dynamics is the study of these shifts, and understanding what drives them is the first step to making sense of everything from job markets to crowded metro coaches. In a country that has just overtaken China as the world’s most populous nation, these forces touch almost every policy decision and personal life choice.

Population growth and density: the pressure on every square kilometre

Population growth refers to the change in the number of people living in a region over a specific period, while density measures how many of those people are packed into each square kilometre of land. The two are linked but distinct. A country can grow rapidly without becoming densely populated if it has vast land area, and a small country can be densely populated even with slow growth.

India occupies just about 2.4% of the world’s land area but is home to roughly 17.5% of the global population. That single statistic explains why density pressures are felt so sharply here. The average density crossed 475 persons per square kilometre by 2021, and within the country the contrasts are staggering. Delhi packs over 11,000 people into each square kilometre, while Arunachal Pradesh has only about 17. Bihar and West Bengal each cross 1,000, but Mizoram stays under 60.

Why density shapes development

High density creates a chain of pressures on regional infrastructure. Roads, sewage systems, electricity grids, and water supply networks must serve far more users per unit of investment. In metropolitan areas like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, the steady influx of migrants from rural areas creates housing shortages, traffic congestion, and stretched sanitation systems. The result is the familiar paradox of Indian cities – booming economies sitting beside slums with poor access to clean water.

Lower-density regions face the opposite problem. Spreading services across sparsely populated districts is expensive. A primary health centre in a remote area of Arunachal Pradesh may serve fewer patients per rupee invested than one in Bihar, yet its existence is essential. This is why planners often think in terms of carrying capacity – the maximum population a region can support given its resources and infrastructure – rather than simply chasing higher growth.

India’s annual population growth rate has fallen sharply over the decades. In the 1990s it was 2.2%; today it is around 0.9%. That deceleration is good news, but the absolute numbers still rise because the base is enormous. The Census of India’s population projections expect the Total Fertility Rate to decline from 2.34 during 2011-2015 to 1.72 during 2031-35, falling well below the replacement level of 2.1. This will eventually slow growth and gradually age the population, with consequences for pensions, elder care, and labour supply.

Sex ratio: the silent signal of social health

The sex ratio is the number of females per 1,000 males in a population. It looks like a simple statistic, but it captures a great deal about a society – health conditions, son preference, migration patterns, and access to medical care all leave their fingerprints on it.

Biologically, slightly more boys are born than girls (about 105 male births to every 100 female births), and higher male mortality usually balances this out over time. When the ratio drifts far from natural expectations, something social is at work. India’s overall sex ratio stood at 943 females per 1,000 males in Census 2011, up from 933 in 2001, and the Sample Registration System has more recently estimated it at around 1,020. The child sex ratio, however, remains lower at 929, which points to selective practices in the womb and early childhood rather than current adult mortality differences.

What causes the imbalance

Several forces shape these numbers. Son preference rooted in inheritance patterns and old-age security expectations has driven sex-selective abortion in some regions, despite the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCNDT) Act banning the practice. Differential access to healthcare and nutrition can also push female mortality higher. Migration plays a role too – in states or districts where male labourers move out for work, the local sex ratio tilts more female; in destination cities with male-dominated workforces, it tilts more male.

Consequences for the labour force and society

A skewed sex ratio is not just a statistical concern. Only about 24% of Indian women were working in 2022, down from 27.8% in 1990 by ILO estimates. When half the working-age population stays outside the formal labour market, the country effectively runs its economy on one engine instead of two. Skewed ratios also create marriage market imbalances, raise concerns about trafficking, and have long-term effects on fertility, since a shortage of women in reproductive ages can further depress birth rates a generation later.

The demographic dividend: India’s narrow window of opportunity

The demographic dividend is the economic boost a country can get when a large share of its population is of working age, with fewer dependents (children and elderly) to support. According to the United Nations Population Fund, about 62.5% of India’s population currently falls in the 15-59 age group, making it one of the youngest large nations in an ageing world.

This window matters because it is temporary. Once fertility falls below replacement and the working-age share peaks, the country begins to age. Research published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications estimated that the demographic transition contributed about 1.9 percentage points per year to India’s per capita income growth between 1981 and 2021 – but the same study made it clear that this gain depends on a supportive policy environment with good healthcare, decent jobs, and gender empowerment.

The two Indias problem

The dividend is not evenly distributed. Northern states are expected to have a younger demographic profile, with their working-age population plateauing only by the middle of this century, while southern states are demographically closer to East Asia and are already approaching the ageing phase. South India contributed about 31% of national GDP in 2023-24 despite a smaller share of population, helped by higher literacy and better social indicators. The implication is that the demographic dividend will arrive in different states at different times, requiring different policy mixes.

Influence of education and health on population dynamics

Demography is shaped not just by how many people exist but by what they know and how healthy they are. Education and health act as both inputs to and outputs of population dynamics.

Literacy and educational attainment

Literacy is one of the strongest predictors of fertility decline. As more women complete secondary and higher education, they tend to marry later, have fewer children, and invest more in each child’s wellbeing. India’s literacy rate of about 75% still trails China’s 97%, and within the country the gap between states is sharp. Kerala has long led on literacy and corresponding health outcomes, while Bihar and Jharkhand lag.

The National Education Policy of 2020 sets out a framework to transform school education by 2030, with a focus on foundational literacy and numeracy and on overhauling the higher education sector. Whether this translates into a skilled workforce able to attract globalised jobs in manufacturing, research, and financial services will largely decide if the demographic dividend becomes a real dividend or simply a missed deadline.

Healthcare facilities and outcomes

Healthcare infrastructure shapes population dynamics through three channels: mortality, fertility, and morbidity. Better neonatal and child healthcare reduces infant mortality, which over time persuades families that fewer children are needed to ensure that some survive – a key trigger of the fertility transition. Improvements in maternal health raise life expectancy and reduce the gender gap in mortality. Investments in geriatric care will matter more in coming decades as the population ages.

India’s network of district hospitals has expanded, with 759 district hospitals as of 2024 and 157 converted into medical colleges to bolster the physician workforce. Yet 17 states and union territories did not have a district hospital in every district as of 2022, which shows how unevenly healthcare is distributed.

The feedback loop between health, education, and demography

Education and health reinforce each other. Educated mothers are more likely to vaccinate their children, seek antenatal care, and use family planning services. Healthy children attend school more regularly and learn better. In states where both literacy and health systems are strong, fertility has already dropped below replacement, while in regions where one or both lag, growth continues at a faster pace. The Carnegie Endowment notes that Kerala’s early prioritisation of literacy and health through social welfare and land reforms shaped a very different demographic trajectory from states that focused on infrastructure or agrarian growth.

Putting the factors together

Population dynamics is best understood not as a list of independent factors but as a system. Growth and density shape the pressure on infrastructure. Sex ratio reflects deeper social attitudes and feeds back into the labour market. The demographic dividend offers a finite window. Education and health determine whether that window is used productively or wasted. None of these can be addressed in isolation – a policy that raises school enrolment for girls also nudges fertility down, improves the sex ratio over time, and expands the future workforce.
